Match Reports

Sunday 14th February 2010

Belper Town Youth 1 Sandiacre 2

Belper recorded their first defeat of the season with a lack luster performance against a team who came to fight for everything, in the end it was the extra desire of the visitors that won them the game. Belper started off OK but never really took control James Sesin put one over the bar from a neat cross from Josh Thompson, Harry Burrows saw a long range effort sail over the bar but in general it was just nip and tuck between the teams. Nick Dalby had a decent shot saved but at the other end Belper looked vulnerable only a diving save at the feet of an attacker by Chris Whiteley stopped a certain goal. Ben Gowing headed one wide and Harry Burrows shot wide before Belper decided to pass the ball around which lead to the opening goal which was scored by Joe Lomax. Belper would normally push on from this position but they stood back and allowed the opposition back in, Sandiacre rallied and equaled the score just before the half time break it was terrible goal to concede as the defense were all at sea.

Belper started the second half brighter but again really did not dominate the play, nothing seemed to go right, passes were wayward and Sandiacre had more desire. Kieran O’Shea and Curtis Reid replaced Josh Thompson and Harry Burrows to try and brighten things up but unfortunately it did not help and Sandiacre took the lead. Belper looked vulnerable to more goals at the back, the midfield were always playing catch up and up front no one had their scoring boots on. Ben Rushby had to be replaced after a crunching tackle left him with a nasty gouge in his shin, several other players finished the game nursing injuries as Belper could not replace them as they had used their full complement of substitutes. Sandiacre shut up shop as the game drew to a conclusion; Belper did try to salvage the game in the dying minutes but were not successful. This is a game everyone would like to forget, let’s hope for a positive reaction next time out.

Sunday 7th January 2010

Belper Town Youth 4 Cobra Oakwood 0

After a thumping 13 nil victory last time out in the cup Belper got back to league football. Belper appeared on paper the stronger side but for large parts of the first half it was the opposition that dominated, only some stern defense from Ben Willison and Robson Grey at the back stopped chances becoming goals. Chris Whitely in goal, Ben Rushby and Thomas Milner had their work cut out to stem the tide of pressure from Oakwood. As the half worn on Belper started to take some degree of control, Harry Burrows impressed again in midfield, his hard work and determination snuffed out the opposition’s attempts and he was also busy to create chances for his own team mates. Josh Thompson always looked a threat on the wing when the ball was played out to him, and indeed it was Josh who was first to test the opposition keeper, a firmly struck volley forced a very good stop. Belper started to stretch their legs Harry Burrows shot over the bar and Ben Gowing put one wide, a lovely through ball from Burrows should have allowed Josh Thompson to open the scoring he beat the keeper but place his shot just wide of the upright. Louis Mundin on the other wing nearly scored when his cross was tipped over the bar by a back peddling keeper. Belper continued to press and after several attempts Harry Burrows finally opened his account with a smartly struck shot. Belper had the better of the last part of the half but failed to score and the opposition hung in their till the half time whistle.

At half time Joe Lomax and James Sesin came on for Jack Atkins and Louis Mundin, the surface and the type of game did not really suit Louis Mundin's style of play. Belper were a lot more positive in the second half they started to play their style of football and didn’t get involved in all the little scraps which were developing around the pitch. The two substitutions proved very successful a cross from James Sesin was met by Joe Lomax who tapped in from close range to give Belper the cushion they deserved. Belper now moved up a gear Harry Burrows was unlucky not to score from long range, but the third goal came soon after, after some determined work by Nick Dalby he put in a perfect back post cross for Josh Thompson to rise and head home with some style. The game was in the bag, and Belper started to enjoy themselves passing and moving like they can, the opposition seemed rattled and at times it was more like a debating society rather than a football match as every decision was discussed at length with the referee. Belper had several chances to add to their tally Josh Thompson who was now tormenting the opposition with his pace could have scored again, Ben Gowing hit the bar from a free kick, and Nick Dalby managed to get away from his marker put a decent effort wide. Josh Gilsenan came on for Thomas Milner and proved what a valuable asset he is to the team he made several telling challenges at left back and by doing so kept the opposition from getting back into the game. Belper finished the game off with a fourth goal which caused some confusion, after several strange offside decisions the referee decided to let play go on and Nick Dalby slotted the ball home. Three points and another clean sheet just what the doctor ordered.

Sunday 15th November 2009

Belper Town Youth 3 Sandiacre 1

Belper ground out another victory on a very narrow pitch with a surface that was barely playable due to the wet weather. Kieran O Shea was by far the brightest player in the opening minutes he was quick and alert and looked a serious threat to the opposition. As the game settled down it became a battle of attrition the heavy playing surface and the lack of space made pretty football difficult, and a strong attacking line up from the opposition caused Belper a lot of problems. Sandiacre were the first to score and deservedly took the lead if the game was to be judged on the balance of play, along run and a fantastic finish which even Chris Whitely in Belper’s goal could not stop made it one nil. This Belper team has a strong mental attitude and they fought their way back into the game, Nick Dalby and Curtis Reid battled away and started to test the keeper, Belper got their breakthrough when a long range effort was spilled by the opposition keeper and Josh Thompson nipped in and put the ball in the net, one all and all to play for. Belper now tied to start playing some football a Louis Mundin cross was pushed wide by the keeper, Curtis Reid had a long range effort saved and Nick Dalby battled for a goal only to be denied by a keeper who kept Sandiacre in the game. At the other end Robson Grey and Ben Willison were playing one of their best games ever they were both strong, mature and decisive against a very difficult attack, it was a joy to see such impressive defensive work. Belper ran out the first half with several other chances Jack Atkins put a shot over the bar and Kieran O Shea saw a neat header saved by the keeper.

At half time Dean Spray replaced James Sesin who had played quite well despite the formation not really suiting the pitch. Belper looked brighter and both Josh Thompson and Nick Dalby started to threaten the opposition goal with some neat runs. On one such run Nick was brought down by a clumsy challenge and the ref pointed to the spot. Louis Mundin strolled up to take the penalty, he sent the keeper the wrong way and stroked the ball into the bottom left hand corner, Belper now 2 – 1 up. Kieran O Shea and Josh Thompson now had a real purple patch each providing the other with chances and at times running past defenders like they weren’t there, Nick Dalby was also joining in trying to get the third goal to kill the game off. Ben Gowing came on for Thomas Milner and the formation was changed to try and seal the win, Curtis Reid must have thought he had scored when he fired in a stinging shot and Josh Thompson also could have scored but both were saved by the keeper. Belper now started to dominate the opposition had been worn down by a fantastic defensive effort by Belper and the shear hard work of the Belper midfield, Jack Atkins in particular did a lot of the unsung graft.

Harry Burrows replaced Josh Thompson, who had run himself into the ground on a very sticky surface, Belper continued to press and looked like they would get the third goal Dean Spray went close, Ben Gowing shot over the bar and Nick Dalby had a decent effort pushed past the post. As the game drew to a conclusion Belper did get a third an inch perfect cross from Louis Mundin found Kieran O Shea who was still as active at the end as he was at the first whistle, Kieran calmly nodded the ball home. Belper home and dry, three more points and still top of the table.

Sunday 15th November 2009

Belper Town Youth 5 East Leake Bantams 0

Another win on the road for Belper and yet another clean sheet for Belper keeper Chris Whitely, he once again was well protected by his defense but he did look assured and made several good saves during the match. East Leake started off quite brightly but they seemed to want to talk themselves out of the game, every decision the referee made was questioned with quite some colorful language until the ref lost his patience and got out his cards. Belper however were a model of control they just kept playing football whilst the other side wound themselves up, Robson Grey and Ben Willison at the back were the subject of a lot of verbal’s but they rose above and played a really good game. Belper always look capable of scoring goals, James Sesin , who impressed for the whole game, was first to go close, he then set up a chance for Ben Gowing which was sailed temptingly wide. Josh Thompson who would end up scoring a hat full set Nick Dalby up, Nick with dogged determination got to the ball and narrowly failed to score. Belper began to get on top both Ben Rushby and Louis Mundin started to feed balls through and finally Josh Thompson ran through past the defenders and finished at the second attempt. The second goal was a classic a move built from the back involving half the Belper team ended with a peach of a cross from Ben Rushby finding Ben Gowing unmarked at the back post, he doesn’t miss those! There was quite a battle taking place on the field  Curtis Reid and Nick Dalby as ever gave it their all chasing and forcing opponents into mistakes, James Sesin was obviously enjoying himself getting involved in all that was good about Belper’s play he made several telling crosses and hit a long range shot which deserved a goal. Ben Gowing or Louis Mundin could have made it three but it was Josh Thompson who finally scored, a run down the wing and a low hard shot into the corner left the defense and keeper stranded. Belper could have had two more goals before half time Robson Grey was saved off the line and Ben Gowing was inexplicably given offside after putting the ball home.

The half time break seemed to give the opposition a boost they came out second half with more purpose Jack Atkins had to be at the top of his game to deal with some strong attackers, Curtis Reid played a terrier like role braking up play in the middle and Belper as a team weathered the storm. Kieran O Shea came on for Nick Dalby, who had practically covered every blade of grass on the pitch in the first half, Kieran was straight into the action he fired a shot across the face of goal Louis Mundin would have scored a tap in but the ball stayed out as it hit the post and went wide. Belper continued to play decent football Josh Thompson scored a fourth and fifth goal and also found time to play some intelegent football with Kieran O Shea. Harry Burrows came on from the subs bench and played some great football, Josh Gilsenan replaced Robson Grey and showed what a valuable asset he is to the team. Belper threatened right to the end, they certainly could have scored more, Ben Rushby, Kieran O Shea and Louis Mundin all had their chances but just as importantly the defense looked solid and unlikely to be beaten. A good performance and yet another win well done to all.

Sunday 8th November 2009

Belper Town Youth 7 Ilkeston juniors 0

Belper eased through into the next round of the cup with an easy win over an Ilkeston side who only fielded 9 players from the start. It took Belper some time to settle to playing against 9 players, they had too much time and as such at times tried to over complicate things. Thomas Milner playing at left back had the first chance to score his crossed curled in and had the keeper scrambling to stop it going in the net, Josh Thompson on the wing had a field day he relished the space and tormented the defense by running by them and playing some telling crosses into the box, it was a shame the Belper strikers did not have their scoring boots on or it would have been a cricket score in the first half alone. Belper finally broke the dead lock a smart shot from Nick Dalby gave them the lead, Belper now started to push for more, Josh Thompson had two efforts saved before he turned provider, Josh’s cross was headed back across the box by Ben Gowing and Ben Willison finished. Belper continued to dominate right up until half time but did not add to their tally, at the back they were unchallenged Robson Grey was first to anything aerial and Ben Willison tidied up anything on the ground. Harry Burrows was active in midfield along with Curtis Reid as they tried to push the game forward.

After the break Jack Atkins came on in place for Harry Burrows, this is a luxury for the management team who has five quality players available on the bench. Ben Rushby had a lively game, playing at right back he was encouraged to push on up the wing which he did with great effect, Ben Gowing as ever was involved in the middle of the park he had several attempts saved before Belper could make it three. Jack Atkins scored the third goal, or did he? His effort took a wicked deflection, Jack maintains it was goal bound anyway, only he knows! The game was now in the bag the opposition had given up the ghost Belper were able to play their game but as in the first half sometimes they did too much and came unstuck. The time was right to make some changes and this time the manager decided to replace both Louis Mundin and Thomas Milner with James Sesin and Josh Gilsenan, both players would play a big part in the rest of the game. The fourth goal was set up by James Sesin with a beautiful cross that Nick Dalby firmly headed home, whilst Josh Gilsenan played a more defense role but completely out jumped and out played his opposite number on the other side. It was James Sesin who scored the fifth goal he collected the ball out on the right wing ran past the defense and riffled the ball into the far corner, past a keeper who proved, by making several good saves, he was no push over. Belper had numerous chances, Ben Willison could have scored, Josh Thompson saw shots saved or sail close past the post, Ben Gowing could have had a hat full, and on another day will. Belper scored their sixth from a Jack Atkins header, there was no doubt about this one but the debate remains did Jack score once or twice who knows? As the clock ran down Belper scored a seventh, finally Ben Gowing hit the back of the net just rewards for a battling performance. Despite the seven goals the game was not the most exciting to watch, one regular spectator was seen to yawn during the second period, but Belper did what they had to do and that was get to the next round, with the bonus of another clean sheet to keep Chris Whitely in the Belper goal stats still looking good.

Sunday 1st November 2009

Belper Town Youth 3 Chellaston 0

The game started in terrible weather conditions, torrential rain and a strong wind which was blowing the length of the pitch, the weather conditions could have ruined the spectacle but it was immediately obvious that both teams had come to play football. The opening encounters were a little cagey as both sides got used to the weather conditions Belper had the best chance of scoring when a corner was knocked goal bound by Nick Dalby, his effort was scrambled off the line. The next passage of play was very much about nip and tuck, both sides trying to create chances but being cancelled out by each other. Belper as ever looked solid at the back, Ben Willison had a really good game he was strong and dominant and was well supported by Robson Grey, in goal Chris Whiteley played well he made a superb save to keep the score at nil nil. In attack Belper looked threatening Josh Thompson on the wing looked up for the challenge and he put several crosses into the box which in the windy conditions caused chaos. Ben Gowing nearly opened the scoring when he was put through by Nick Dalby, his effort was saved and from the resulting corner Belper did manage to score. The ball was knocked into the box, Robson Grey rose and headed it towards the bottom corner there was a scramble to save it but the ball finally crossed the line, who had the last touch is difficult to say but definitely Robson will claim it. Belper began to get on top as half time approached Thomas Milner and Louis Mundin tried to build things from the back, Dean Spray was busy and always available on the wing, Curtis Reid was strong and effective in midfield, but Belper were not able to add to their tally before half time.

The second half began with the wind behind Belper, which meant they needed to make some adjustments to their style of play Ben Willison was vocal and at the heart of everything in defense whilst up front Josh Thompson and Dean Spray looked to run onto through balls, their efforts were thwarted several times by some intriguing offside decisions. Belper finally got a second goal, after some tidy defending at the back the ball was quickly moved up the field; Ben Gowing went through one on one with the keeper and slotted the ball home. The second goal seemed to take the wind out of the opposition and from this point on Belper were rarely challenged, Joe Gent was given a run on the wing in place of Josh Thompson to see how he faired, Harry Burrows who had one of his quieter games could have made the score three nil only a fine save from the keeper stopped him getting his name on the score sheet. Belper got their third goal curtsey of shear dogged determination by Nick Dalby the ball was hit against the bar, the rebound fell into the six yard box, Nick scrapped for the ball got a shooting chance which was blocked, scrapped for the ball again, won it again, created the opening and scored, well done son! Dean Spray who played one of his best games yet for Belper had to be replaced after getting a nasty knock on the ankle, James Sesin who came on in his place demonstrates the strength in depth Belper have in their squad. Belper were now in charge Curtis Reid made some interesting brakes from mid field Louis Mundin was able to get up front more often and Thomas Milner pushed on from left back with great effect. Belper made their final substitution Jack Atkins who has been missing for a few weeks came on in place of Harry Burrows, Jack immediately showed what a flexible player he is by slotting into midfield just to keep it tight and secure the game. Belper had several other decent chances but scored no more goals, more importantly they walked away with three points and yet another clean sheet having played the team second in their division, people will be already asking how they can be beaten.

Sunday 25th October 2009

Belper Town Youth 5 Chesapeake 0

Despite being down to a bare 13 players due to injuries, sickness and county commitments Belper managed to comprehensively beat Chesapeake by five clear goals. It was a bright clear morning but a strong wind blowing the length of the pitch affected the play, it suited Josh Thompson on the Belper wing, he was able to run onto long balls using his exceptional pace and was first to test the keeper. Belper played some neat football at times there was some slick interplay in midfield between Harry Burrows and Curtis Reid, whilst Josh Gilsenan was always on hand if required. Belper looked particularly solid at the back, Robson Grey dominated any aerial challenge, he was ably supported by Ben Willison in the middle of the park whilst Thomas Milner and Louis Mundin were eager outlets as Belper built from the back. Belper had several chances before forcing a corner, Curtis Reid hit the ball into the box a wicked curve and maybe a little wind assist took the ball straight into the net. Belper now had one of their busiest periods Harry Burrows fired over the bar, Josh Thompson volleyed wide and Dean Spray who had been very effective on the wing put one into the side netting. The second goal did actually come from the long ball game, Josh Thompson ran onto a long clearance put the ball over the oncoming keeper ran around him and calmly nodded the ball home. Belper now went all out for victory Josh Thompson hit a rasping shot against the post which was still shaking several minutes later, Nick Dalby added a third when he picked up a cross from Louis Mundin turned and put the ball into the corner of the net. As Belper dominated the game the opposition became more and more frustrated, the referee had his work cut out to deal with some petulant challenges and a lot of back chat which eventually lead to the opposition manager being asked to leave the field of play. As ever the Belper team kept their cool and played their game, at the back Robson Grey impressed by dealing with any attacks and up front Nick Dalby was definitely in the hunt for more goals.

Joe Gent replaced Dean Spray at half time and the game continued with Belper making all the running. After ten minutes James Sesin came on for Harry Burrows who had a busy first half, the substitution had immediate effect James put the ball through to Nick Dalby who happily put the ball away to make it 4 – 0. The next attack saw provider turn into scorer, this time Josh Thompson put James Sesin through and James finished with some style to make the score 5 – 0, game over! Belper continued to play right to the end there were notable individual performances but the most noticeable thing was the spirit and togetherness which meant there was a fine team performance. Ben Gowing who filled in as keeper wasn’t really tested but he dealt adequately with those things that came his way.

Sunday 18th October 2009

Belper Town Youth 7  Allestree Juniors 1

Belper recorded another victory but the score line did not tell the whole story, Belper could have won by a much higher margin but at times they were lack luster and failed to convert decent chances, that being said Kieran O’Shea scored five and won a penalty, he would settle for that most weeks! Belper started bright enough Dean Spray looked particularly up for the action right from the start, Ben Rushby who was playing at the back was the first to threaten goal, a strong run and then a shot went narrowly wide. No surprise that Kieran O’Shea opened the scoring a long range shot was fumbled and he pounced to put the ball home, his second goal which followed shortly after was a joy to see, the ball was forced wide and Kieran managed to get the ball in the net from what seemed to be an impossible angle. Belper pushed on and for a while dominated the game, Josh Gilsenan was impressive in midfield, he is not the biggest player in the Belper side but certainly punches above his weight. Joe gent had a lively game on the wing he had two decent efforts during this period, one was saved the other hit the side netting. Completely against the run of play Allestree pulled one back, the Belper defense opened up and before they knew it the ball was in the net and it was 2 – 1.Belper now tried to regain the lead they had opened up, Ben Willison narrowly missed with a front post header from a corner, Kieran O’Shea had a free kick saved and then from a ridiculous distance out Harry Burrow made a speculative shot which fooled the keeper and looped into the top corner, 3 – 2 Belper.

At half time Josh Thompson replaced Harry Burrows and immediately went on the goal hunt, first a shot just wide then a header just over, Kieran O Shea could have scored again, a neat turn and a strong run through ended with a shot that was well saved. Louis Mundin came on to replace Ben Rushby at right back and Belper tried to extend their lead but they really did not look assured. After several attempts on goal Belper nerves were settled when Josh Thompson laid a perfect ball for Ben Gowing who struck it first time into the corner. The opposition seemed to have the wind taken out of their sails and their resistance faded away, Ben Gowing gave way to Curtis Reid who had been waiting to get on but it was Kieran O Shea who would score the remaining goals, the first from a pass from Joe Gent, the next a smart finish from a through ball from Curtis Reid and the last one after some hard work from Joe Gent. In between the flurry of goal scoring, Dean Spray had a couple of chances, Joe Gent had several telling runs down the wing, at times he need the skills of a hurdler as lunging challenges tried to stop him. Belper were awarded a penalty when Kieran was brought down in the box, on this occasion they failed to convert, a very rare occurrence for the usual spot kick taker. Another deserved win for Belper which keep them right in the hunt at the top of the table.

Belper Town Youth 4 Cobra Oakwood 2

Belper continued their winning ways with a hard fought victory over a very physical Cobra Oakwood side, truth was they should have beaten them easily but the Belper side played in patches. Belper dominated the first half and it was nice to see Kieran O’Shea starting this game with the same pace and determination that he showed in last week’s thriller, he was the first Belper player to have a shot, Harry Burrows was the second to have a go at goal only to see his effort saved. Belper forced corner after corner and eventually a cross from Louis Mundin found Robson Grey unmarked, he made no mistake and nodded the ball home. Belper went for more goals, Nick Dalby had two decent efforts saved, Kieran O’Shea headed one wide and then set up Ben Gowing who shot over the bar. The second goal just wouldn’t come Nick Dalby had a goal bound effort save off the line and at the other end Jack Atkins and Ben Willison had to be alert to keep a growing menace from the opposition at bay. The game went into a strange period with a lot of broken play as the referee tried to control a game which was becoming ever more physical, he gave a penalty to the opposition which few off the watching fans agreed with and from the spot kick Cobra leveled the score. Belper had two more scoring opportunities before half time, Kieran O’Shea had a shot saved at close range and Dean Spray had a good effort tipped over the bar, the teams went in level.

Ben Rushby replaced Louis Mundin at half time and immediately showed his intent, a run down the right wing followed by a screaming shot which flew across the face of goal. Belper pushed on and when Kieran O’Shea was fouled in the box the ref pointed at the spot and Robson Grey strolled up placed the ball in the right corner, Belper 2 Cobra 1. Belper extend their lead with a third goal from Robson Grey, this time another header. Josh Thompson replaced Curtis Reid as Belper tried to make the game secure, Nick Dalby had a shot smothered by the keeper and then when the ball broke free could only manage at a stretch to hit the side netting. Josh Thompson was busy on the left he tried to get in some decent crosses but the wind took at least one of them away. Josh Gilsenan came on for Kieran O Shea who had picked up a knock. Belper continued to play in patches, Harry Burrows long range effort deserved more Ben Gowing had a shot deflected wide and Josh Thompson had a couple of chances. As the clock ran down Belper’s lead looked a bit insecure, but Nick Dalby calmed all the nerves with a superbly executed goal, a goal which is richly deserved by a player who always gives his all and does not necessarily get the goals or the credit he deserves.

Sunday 4th October 2009

Belper Town Youth 5  Mickleover 4

Belper pulled off the comeback of all time, truly a game of two halves! In the first half Belper were shocking, the marking was none existent the movement up front was terrible and in mid field the capitulated allowing the opposition free range. From the first kick of the ball Mickleover looked on top, within three minute they had hit the post and scored the first of their four goals. Belper did not even get close to them and as such, more goals were inevitable, the second was a cracking shot that left the Belper keeper with no chance but the third and fourth were comical, number three was a simple passing move which cut out the whole Belper defense and the fourth goal the attacker was given so much time and space even I could have scored! On the positive side Belper’s heads never dropped, they kept playing and towards the end of the half they did show some flashes. Joe Gent worked hard on the wing and saw a shot hit the post and go wide. Nick Dalby and Curtis Reid battled on and both had half chances which were saved, Dean Spray had a decent shot which dipped but unfortunately only after it had gone over the bar. At half time the teams went in with the opposition sure the game was in the bag, what they did not realize Belper are made of sterner stuff. Kieran O’Shea replaced a very disappointed Joe Gent at half time who had not played badly he was just the victim of a poor team performance.

Anyway back to the action, what a second half, Belper were unrecognizable from the first half, they played with passion, determination and no small amount of skill a stunned Mickleover side just folded before them. The all out assault on the goal started with a shot from Ben Gowing quickly followed by an effort from Nick Dalby, Thomas Milner fired an excellent cross in that begged to be headed home, finally after some physical action Kieran O’Shea opened the floodgates with a shot past the keeper. Dean Spray nearly made it two but the keeper saved at his feet, on the next attack Ben Gowing was bundled over in the box. Louis Mundin calmly strolled up, put the keeper the wrong way to make it 4 – 2 game on! Belper now battered the opposition, chance after chance was created, Harry Burrow headed over the bar, and Ben Gowing went closer and hit the bar. At the other end Ben Willison and Robson Grey looked solid, Chris Whitely in the Belper goal made a very important save and Belper pushed on to save the match. The third goal was all about team play and passion Belper won the ball in midfield Thomas Milner fed the ball to Kieran O’Shea who teed it up for Ben Gowing to finish. Belper were now fully intent on winning the game Nick Dalby was causing havoc in the opposition defense he chased everything down and force the opposition into mistake after mistake. Belper were awarded a second penalty which disappointed the home fans but you will never see such a blatant  push from behind in your life, again Louis Mundin stroked the ball home to level the scores. Now the mind games began, Belper showed they not only had the playing skills but also the mental strength to finish the opposition off. The final goal was scored by Dean Spray a cracking shot after the ball had been half cleared from one of many corners which Belper had forced. Belper played out the game to record a stunning victory, which is even more impressive when you realize that Joe Lomax, Jack Atkins, Ben Rushby and James Sesin, all first choice players, were sat in the stand with injuries. A fantastic morning’s entertainment and a great experience for the team, I can never remember this side conceding four goals let alone going four down, but they have proven to themselves they can comeback from any position. Well done!

Belper Town Youth 5  Chesapeake U18's 1

Belper got back to winning ways with what turned out to be a comprehensive victory over Chesapeake. In the first half the two teams were quite evenly matched Belper were first to show but the opposition were always in there trying for every ball, Ben Gowing had the first chance on goal only to see his shot go wide, Joe Lomax was next to try and Joe Gent had an effort smothered at Close range. Belper forced corner after corner and eventually a header from a corner was nodded on by Ben Gowing for Robson Grey to rifle the ball home. Belper had to be sharp from the restart as the opposition threw everything at them, as has been reported many times it was Chris Whitely in Belper's goal who kept out the opposition, a fantastic double save kept Belper in the lead. Belper got a second goal scored by Joe Gent when he hit a long range ball from wide on the wing which sailed into the top corner. Just as previously had happened the loss of a goal seemed to spur the opposition on and only stout defending from Ben Willison and Jack Atkins plus another fine save kept Belper’s two goal lead intact. Nick Dalby and Curtis Reid worked tirelessly both had chances to score only to see their efforts pushed wide or smothered by a less than confident keeper, Josh Gilsenan had the last chance of the half but was unlucky when his effort was also saved by the keeper.

At half time Harry Burrows and Dean Spray replaced Josh Gilsenan and Joe Lomax, the formula appeared to work, Belper scored direct from the restart, a nice passing move involving several players ended up with Ben Gowing slotting the ball home from close range. At three nil Belper looked home and dry but they did not drop the pace, Nick Dalby ran and ran chasing down every half chance, Dean Spray took up some fine positions on the left and when the ball was played to him he looked a real threat. On the right wing Joe Gent put in some decent balls, on a different day Curtis Reid and Nick Dalby would have each scored a hat full. At the back Thomas Milner and Jack Atkins looked solid, Robson Grey was a tower of strength and Ben Willison was always there to tidy up any half chances. Belper did finally score a fourth goal, a clever through ball from Ben Gowing split the defense and Dean Spray took the ball round the keeper and tapped it home. Belper continued to press for more and the fifth goal was a joy to watch three decisive passes from defense to attack and a clinical finish put the game beyond doubt. The opposition did score a conciliation goal but after the second half performance no one was in doubt who was the better team. It was a good team performance also several fine individual performances but one player stood out for his girt and pure effort and for those reasons Nick Dalby was awarded man of the match.

Belper Town Youth 2 Singh Brothers 2

A hard fought draw which was possibly the right result in a competitive match that built to an exciting finale. Singh Brothers started at a very fast pace they were quicker to the ball and more aggressive in the challenge, Belper had few chances in the first half  but Curtis Reid could have scored when the opposition keeper dropped the ball and Curt nearly made him pay for his mistake. Belper had to defend well as the opposition launched attack after attack, Jack Atkins and Robson Grey played well but they could do nothing about a long range shot that screamed into the net giving the opposition a one nil lead. Chris Whiteley in Belper goal had to be on top form to keep Belper in the game he made a great save with his feet as an attacker homed in on goal and he came and collected the ball, with confidence, from several high balls. As the half drew to a close Belper came more into the game and they started to pressurize the opposition into mistakes. At half time Dean Spray who had shown lots of promise had to be replaced because of an injury, Josh Thompson was the ideal replacement as he relishes this kind of challenge.

Belper looked more like the part in the second half they competed better and started to create real chances Ben Gowing had a free kick pushed wide, Robson Grey went on a charge and had a decent chance but did not score. Belper made a couple more changes in quick succession first Louis Mundin replaced Ben Rushby and then Harry Burrows came on for James Sesin. Belper started to dominate and after a goal mouth scramble were awarded a penalty, after a long delay whilst the opposition debated the validity of the decision Louis Mundin calmly stroked the ball into the net. Belper now pushed on for the win Josh Thompson and Joe Lomax both had chances but failed to score. Belper were awarded a free kick right on the touch line, Joe gent encouraged Ben Gowing to go for goal, Ben obliged and swung the ball into the top right-hand  corner, Belper were good value for their lead at this stage. The opposition rallied towards the end and another hard hit long range effort gave the Belper keeper no chance and made the score 2 – 2. It was a hard fought battle right to the end with both sides trying to go for the win, despite some unnecessary verbal’s and some interesting calls for off side and hand ball it was a game which entertained right to the end.

Belper Town Youth 2 Hilton Harriers 0

Belper won a match which they completely dominated in all departments and could have easily ended with a score line in double figures. After an encouraging training session on Friday night all the players brought the same enthusiasm and energy to the game and as such the opposition had no answer for the passing, movement and dedication. Belper forced a corner early in the game and the keeper half cleared it, the resulting cross from Thomas Milner was spilled by the keeper and Ben Gowing put the ball over the bar, this type of incident would continue right through the first half. Joe Lomax who had yet another good game had two shots both pushed wide. Belper did get the ball in the net eventually, Joe Gent made an intelligent run into the box put the ball past the keeper, Kieran O’Shea tapped the ball in only to judged offside. Chris Whitely in the Belper goal made a fine save at the other end, it was not a busy game for Chris for long periods he had nothing to do. Belper went back on the offensive hunting for goals Thomas Milner saw his shot go wide, Kieran O’Shea put a free kick narrowly over the bar, Ben Gowing ran past several defenders but had his shot saved. Belper then took to striking the ball off the post and bar, both Joe Lomax and Nick Dalby hit the bar before Robson Grey hit the post. Robson made a quick recovery , he headed home with some power from the next corner to open the scoring, Nick Dalby and Joe Lomax tried to extend the lead but to no avail and Belper went in ahead just by one goal at half time.

Belper started the second half in the way they finished the first, total domination and creating chance after chance, finally Ben Gowing scored the second goal to give them some breathing space. With Belper well on top the manager decided to try some changes Dean Spray came on for Joe Gent who had played particularly well, Dean was straight into the action and caused all sorts of problems for the opposition. Josh Thompson replaced Kieran O’Shea who looks like a real prospect for this season and Belper continued to out play the opposition. Josh Gilsenan came on for Thomas Milner at the back and slotted neatly into a back four who looked strong and solid the whole game. Belper had numerous chances to extend their lead but post, bar or keeper kept the ball out and the score at two nil. A very pleasing team performance with some outstanding individual efforts, most notable was Robson Grey who was awarded man of the match for a rock solid defensive performance and for being a danger up front
